Cheryl Cole Malaria

2010 was a traumatic year for British singer Cheryl Cole. In July, Cheryl contracted malaria while on holiday in Tanzania, Africa, with her close friend Derek Hough, whom she now credits with saving her life. Malaria is a potentially fatal disease transmitted by the Anopheles mosquito, which can be prevented by taking anti malaria tablets.

In an emotional interview on Piers Morgan's "Life Stories" show, aired on 23rd October 2010, Cheryl revealed details of her almost fatal encounter with malaria, which happened just 12 weeks before.

Cheryl Cole on the Piers Morgan Show

Cheryl described to Piers Morgan how she began to get the first symptoms of malaria the day after her birthday. In the morning when she tried to apply her moisturiser, she noticed her skin was sore. Cheryl thought she just had a bad hangover after consuming a few vodkas the night before, as she did not usually drink. Malaria never crossed Cheryl's mind, even though she had recently returned from Africa.

In the time that followed, Cheryl's symptoms got steadily worse. Her skin remained sore, her lips were blue and she was drenched with sweat. A colleague at a Vogue photo shoot noticed there was something wrong with Cheryl, and suggested she was exhausted and needed to schedule some time off work. After collapsing on the photo shoot, Cheryl went home to rest.

Cheryl's Malaria Diagnosis

That night, Cheryl's friend Derek suggested she have her blood tested. Tests confirmed Cheryl not only had malaria, but that she had the worst, most dangerous, life-threatening type of malaria. Cheryl was deteriorating rapidly. She became seriously ill and her vital organs began to fail. Had she not been rushed to intensive care, she may not have survived.

Cheryl recalled being told there was a possibility she might die. She was so tired, weak, sick and exhausted at the time, that if she was going to die, she wished it would hurry up and happen. Cheryl actually felt like she was dying.

Cheryl Cole's Malaria Recovery

Cheryl Cole made a full recovery from malaria. Her ordeal highlights the importance of protecting yourself against mosquito bites and mosquito-borne diseases. When travelling abroad, find out if there is a risk of malaria in your country of destination.

Familiarise yourself with the symptoms of malaria and seek medical attention immediately if you suspect you have it. Take anti malaria tablets if advised to do so. Use a good insect repellent and sleep under a mosquito net.
