Mosquito Insecticide
Insect repellents repel insects, whereas mosquito insecticides kill insects on contact. When choosing a method of pest control, be sure to distinguish the difference between a repellent and an insecticide. In addition to mosquitoes, insecticides kill beneficial insects such as bees and dragon flies, which is undesirable.
Contains pyrethrum derived from African Chrysanthemums. May be used as a room spray or insect repellent. Effective against mosquitoes, midges, flies and other biting insects. Safe for both adults and children. DEET-free and non-irritating to skin.
Pyrethrum Spray
Pyrethrum is another name for the Chrysanthemum, a perennial flowering plant of which there are several species. Pyrethrum is also used to refer to a natural mosquito insecticide extracted from some species of Chrysanthemum, particularly C. cinerariifolium.
PreVent pyrethrum spray contains 100 precent natural pyrethrum and is used as a room spray to clear rooms of insects. It is also an insect repellent and can be safely applied to skin to protect against biting insects such as midges and mosquitoes.
Pyrethrins
Pyrethrins are extracted from pyrethrum, and have an insecticidal effect, attacking a mosquito's nervous system. In small doses pyrethrins have an insect repellent effect.
Pyrethrin insecticide is less toxic and more environmentally friendly than synthetic mosquito insecticides as it is biodegradable, however, it can still be harmful to fish, birds and other mammals and humans. Pyrethrins are often found in pet shampoos used to control fleas.
Pyrethroids
Pyrethroids are synthetic mosquito insecticides similar to pyrethrins (permethrin, prallethrin, phenothrin, allethrin, transfluthrin and tetramethrin are pyrethroids).
Pyrethroid insecticides are used in insecticide formulations such as mosquito net treatments, Plug in mosquito repellents, mosquito smoke coils and room sprays, as well as insect repellents.
Always remember pyrethroid-containing mosquito insecticides will often kill beneficial insects as well as undesirable creepy-crawlies. They are also harmful to fish and other aquatic life.
