Plug in mosquito repellents, or mosquito plug ins, effectively eliminate biting mosquitoes, midges, gnats and other flying insects from the room by slowly releasing insecticide vapours (active ingredients may include boallethrin or prallethrin). When mosquitoes come into contact with the vapours released by a plug in mosquito repellent, they are killed.

Do Plug In Mosquito Repellents Work?
Plug in bug repellents are intended for use indoors and particularly overnight when mosquito bites are more likely to occur, if there is a risk of mosquitoes entering the room.
When plugged into the mains, the heat output from a plug in mosquito repellent allows the controlled release of vapour from an insecticide impregnated tablet slotted inside, or an attachable liquid bottle. It will start killing mosquitoes almost immediately after being plugged in.
One mosquito plug in per average sized room (about 30 cubic metres) should be sufficient to keep the room clear of mosquitoes. Plug in insect repellents are about the same size as a standard electrical plug, so they are small and convenient enough to take away when travelling.

Plug in bug repellents that use tablets, such as Lifesystems Plug in Dual Mosquito Killer Unit should be fitted with a new tablet each night, as one tablet is effective for about eight hours. Packs of refills of around 20 tablets are widely available.
Liquid Plug In Insect Repellents
Alternatively, mosquito plug ins that use bottles of liquid insecticide are available. A liquid-containing bottle (about 35ml) is attached to a mosquito plug, and offers around 40 nights protection against mosquito bites, after which a new refill bottle will need to be attached. Some mosquito repellent units use both liquid and tablets.
There are many different brands of tablet and liquid plug in mosquito repellents on the market, with tablet and liquid refills generally designed for their own particular brand. However, refills can sometimes be used with other mosquito plugs. Check the labelling.
Are Plug In Bug Repellents Safe?
The vapours from plug in insect repellents are harmless, odourless and undetectable to humans.
General safety advice for plug in bug repellents includes the washing of hands after handling, and keeping away from children, animals and food. The vapours from mosquito plug ins can be harmful to fish, so keep fish tanks covered or remove fish from the room. Throw any partially used tablets away.
Plug in mosquito repellents are generally considered to be very safe and effective.
